According to the Russian government regulation ¹ 609 dated 12.10.2005,
standards regulating exhaust as related to vehicles manufactured on the territory
of the Russian Federation are put in force in the following terms:
- Emission class 2 – from 2006;
- Emission class 3 – from January 1, 2008;
- Emission class 4 – from January 1, 2010;
- Emission class 5 – from January 1, 2014.
One of the main conditions of observance of the emission standards during exploitation of a vehicle is the use of fuels of a certain quality.
Table 1 shows the main technical requirements to the quality of gasoline assuring observance
of Euro-2, Euro-3, Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards.
Reconstruction of the majority of Russian refineries for them to produce gasoline meeting the Euro
standards is rather slow due to the lack of proper financing.
To settle this problem a new technology is offered. This technology allows to modify the existing
gasoline types to meet the Euro-3 and Euro-4 requirements. By adding water or an ethanol solution to
gasoline, the technology allows to increase the octane number and reduce emission of gases
(Table 2).
The received mixture of gasoline and ethanol solution in proportion 5…15 to 95…85 of masses is
stable during a number of years. (Previous repeated attempts to add water to gasoline did not
succeed because of phase immiscibility).
Moreover, it is revealed that modified gasoline is notable for its detergent properties. Use of
such gasoline improves performance of the carburetor and the engine capacity.
Adding of the ethanol solution to gasoline increases the octane number, which allows to modify
standard gasoline to medium-octane gasoline, as well as medium octane gasoline to high octane gasoline.
ÌModification of stove fuels and marine fuels with water in the amount of 18-20% of the mass allows to
reduce pollutant emissions by 30-40%. At this, the fuel has a good sedimentation consistency similar
to gasoline. After processing its viscosity and freezing point reduce. The heating value of stove fuel modified by water to 20% does not reduce.
Technological scheme of fuel modification
On the basis of the existing plant, RON 80 and RON 93 gasoline were received from RON 65 gasoline by introduction
of ethanol and water to the straight-run gasoline.
